2008 Snowboard Courses
::Certificate in Snowboard Instruction (C.S.I.)
CSI is the entry-level instructor’s course aimed at people interested in joining the snowsports industry. The four day course includes modules covering rider improvement, the teaching model, progressions for levels one and two students, guest service elements, teaching children, class handling and safety.
Candidates’ riding is continually assessed during the four days. Candidates must be able to ride all blue groomed terrain with good form and using an efficient blend of movements. Additionally candidates must perform a tidy skidded turn demonstration on green terrain.
Candidates teaching ability is assessed on the final day during a 15-minute lesson. Here the candidate presents a step from the level one or two progression to other members of their group.

::Stage One
Stage one is aimed at instructors wanting to progress within the snowsports industry to teaching students at higher levels (SBI levels 3 and 4). Minimum requirement to sit stage one is snowboard CSI or equivalent foreign qualification (see FAQs) or NZSIA ski stage one.
The five-day course includes modules covering rider improvement, movement analysis, the teaching model, progressions for levels 3 and 4 students, class handling and safety on mountain terrain.
Candidates riding is continually assessed over the five days with key requirements being; riding all blue groomed and off piste terrain with good form. Tidy skidded and edged demonstrations on piste. Tidy demonstrations of level 3 and 4 freestyle elements (switch riding green terrain, straight air, ollie, nose roll, air 180)
Candidates are formally assessed on student movement analysis and lesson planning via a video clip followed by a brief interview with their trainer. Candidates’ teaching is assessed on the final day during a 30 minute teaching presentation to other members of their group.

::Stage Two
Stage two is for instructors wanting to progress within the snowsports industry to teaching students in all mountain and elementary terrain park situations (SBI levels 5 and 6). Minimum requirements for stage two are SBI stage one or equivalent foreign qualifications (see FAQs)
The course is split into a five day precourse with a three-day exam later in the season. Modules covered in the precourse include rider improvement in all mountain terrain (off piste) teaching levels five and six progressions, movement analysis at levels five and six, class handling and safety in all mountain situations including off piste and terrain park.
Candidates riding, teaching and movement analysis are assessed during the three-day exam. Riding is continually assessed over the three days with key requirements being dynamic turns on and off piste, switch riding including edged turns on piste and skidded turns off piste. All mountain riding off piste including black terrain and competency on elementary terrain park features including tabletops and straight rails/ boxes, tidy Air 360.
Candidates teaching is assessed during a thirty minute lesson presentation ((SBI levels 5 and 6) to other members of their group. Candidate’s movement analysis skills are assessed via a video clip followed by a brief interview with their trainer.
::Freestyle Coaches' Course
The freestyle coaches’ course is designed for instructors who want to get involved with coaching freestyle in and out of the park. There is a strong focus on park/pipe etiquette and safety.
The riding standard for this course involves elementary straight airs (forwards and switch) and grabs (f/s and b/s ) 180s, 360s on small park tables.
Pipe riding includes dropping in both walls, pumping transitions,
appropriate speed control and edging skills , clean hop turns at lip with and without grabs. A 360.
Jibs consist of 50/50 and boardslide on boxes.
Candidates will be trained in basic movement analysis skills on snow and/or via video.
Candidates will be assessed on both the riding elements and a brief coaching presentation where they will be expected to introduce freestyle skills using the 4 step plan (stationary/simple/complex/freeride ) elements of safety, park etiquette and fun.
::Trainers Certification
This qualification is for fully certified (SBINZ stage two or equivalent) instructors who wish to become involved with training staff at their resort or candidates for their CSI or stage one qualifications.
This qualification is split into a four day workshop with a two day assessment later in the season. The workshop includes modules on clinicing skills, CSI, stage one and stage two demos and personal rider improvement. Rider analysis is also covered via video.
Candidates are expected to present a clinic during the workshop and will receive peer and trainer feedback.
Assessment
Candidates’ riding is assessed via CSI, stage one and stage two demos, along with freeride and freestyle elements according to the situations present on the day.
Candidates are assessed on their movement analysis skills via various video clips followed by a technical discussion with the examiner.
Candidate’s clinicing skills are assessed during a one hour presentation to the other candidates. Clinic topics are nominated by the examiner.
